Ready for more snow?
A winter storm warning has been issued for Southeastern Massachusetts and a winter storm watch for the following counties: Essex, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Worcester.
“Heavy wet snow possible which may mix with rain and sleet at times,” the National Weather Service wrote in the winter storm watch. “Plan on slippery road conditions. Gusty winds and heavy wet snow could bring down tree branches and result in some power outages.”
The winter storm warning goes into effect at 7 a.m. Sunday and is scheduled to remain active until early Monday morning.
The winter storm is expected to drop as much as a foot of snow on communities in Massachusetts this weekend.
Below is a look how much snow is in the forecast and when to expect it.
How much will we get?
In a expected snowfall map issued by the National Weather Service early Saturday morning, most of the state can expect four to eight inches, with pockets of communities seeing higher and lower totals.
In Boston and the Greater Boston area, six to eight inches is in the forecast. Further north near the New Hampshire state line, lower totals are expected, with Lawrence and Newburyport likely to see four to six inches.
In Central Massachusetts, Worcester is expected to see more snow than Fitchburg, with six to eight inches in the forecast for Worcester and surrounding communities and four to six in Fitchburg.
In the Pioneer Valley, Hampden County will see more snow than further north. Communities east of Springfield can expect six to eight inches while Springfield residents can expect four to six, along with communities west of the river. Further north in Hampshire County, four to six inches is expected. In Franklin County, the majority of communities can expect four to six inches except those north and west of Greenfield, where three to four inches is expected.
Berkshire County will see among the lowest totals in this weekend’s storm with three to four inches expected from Great Barrington to North Adams.
Southeastern Massachusetts can expect the highest snow totals. A pocket of communities just north of New Bedford can expect eight inches to up to a foot of snow, the highest forecast amount in the state. Most of the region can expect six to eight inches, with lower amounts forecast for Nantucket and part of Cape Cod.
Will the forecast change?
Still about a day out, the storm’s track could shift. We’ll have an update Saturday evening with the latest expected snow totals.
Here are high and low amount forecast maps from the National Weather Service, which they estimate at about 10% chance.
Also included are estimates for the chance of communities across the commonwealth to see four inches, six inches or more.
When will snow start to fall?
Snow is expected Sunday morning for much of Massachusetts, hitting Western Massachusetts first, then reaching Worcester followed by Boston.
The National Weather Service cautions that snowfall can be heavy at times, with the potential for snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour Sunday afternoon. Travel may be hazardous due to heavy snowfall and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.
Snow is expected to end in Massachusetts by Sunday evening.
