CHESTNUT HILL, MA — Newton, Brookline and Massachusetts State Police descended the Chestnut Hill mall Monday night a day after violence and looting in Boston set area shop owners, mall proprietors and police on alert.
According to Newton police, dozens of drivers, many from out of state or in rental cars, on Monday gathered at The Shops at Chestnut Hill, which had upped security measures in anticipation of potential looting. Some drivers after police officers approached them and a fight broke out between a state trooper and at least one individual. There was no looting.
Police were called to the mall parking lot Monday around 8:30 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle.
"The reporting party stated that they observed 7 to 8 young black males in a black van cover the license plate to the vehicle and it appeared as if they were going to rob the mall," according to the police report.
By the time police arrived, the van had left, but while officers were talking to the mall security about 12 other cars showed up, several with out-of-state license plates, according to police.
The cars gathered on the southwest side of the mall parking lot, the opposite side of the parking lot from where the only business open was situated.
When an officer went to go talk to the drivers, they drove off in different directions, according to a police report. The officer followed and stopped two of the cars across the street at Wegmans Plaza, as more Newton, Brookline and state police officers arrived.
A state police trooper at one point called for help "as he was fighting with a suspect on the Route 9 westbound/Chestnut Hill Upper Mall entry ramp," according to the report, referencing the old name of the mall.
Several other state police units were able to come to his aid within moments and gain control of the situation, police said.
Newton, Brookline and state police units patrolled the area for the next several hours, according to the report, as more than 50 cars came and went circling both the Chestnut Hill Upper and lower malls, police said.
The next evening police said they found vandalism at the nearby shopping district The Street.
Police said they found "NEWTON COPS ARE RACIST F12" in black paint on the white
brick side of 55 Boylston St. and "F12" on a white brick under a parking area of 43 Boylston St.
Police and mall owners in Greater Boston are on alert following violence and looting at several businesses in Boston on Sunday night and early Monday morning. Boston police said they arrested 53 people.
