On Monday, the Major League Baseball Players Association rejected the MLB's proposal for a 2020 season. Shortly after the MLBPA shot down that proposal, commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the league will impose a 60-game season and players have to respond by Tuesday night.
There's also been talk about how these negotiations will affect the upcoming CBA negotiations in the near future. During Tuesday's installment of "Nothing Personal with David Samson," David Samson admitted that these current disagreements regarding the 2020 season can't affect the CBA talks and that those talks need to start "fresh."
"I'm here to tell you that it's just business. There is nothing personal going on between the union and the owners," Samson said. "There may not be a lot of love. There may not be a lot of respect. But what there is: a lot of knowledge, a lot of intelligence, and a lot of institutional understanding. When they start negotiating the new collective bargaining agreement, they've got to start fresh. They cannot let what is taking place now seep into it and go into that negotiation angry."
The current CBA, which was established in 2016, is set to expire in Dec. 2021. Of course, that is over a year away, but based on the current negotiations, it could be a long process.
In order for the process to get accomplished in a timely manner, the two sides will need to put aside their current differences and come to terms for baseball's sake. It'll certainly be interesting to see if what is currently happening affects those CBA conversations.
