Tropical Storm Kay Bringing Heavy Rain, Strong Winds To Southern California - The Weather Channel

  • Kay will weaken as it tracks away from Baja California into the weekend.
  • Its moisture will wring out heavy rain that could cause flooding in Southern California.
  • Kay will also bring strong wind gusts, especially to mountainous areas.

Tropical Storm Kay's moisture will fuel soaking rain in Southern California that could trigger flooding as strong winds also howl through parts of the region.

Kay made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane Thursday afternoon in Mexico's Baja California Peninsula southeast of Punta Eugenia. The storm is now weakening rapidly as its low-pressure center begins to curl westward well to the south of Southern California.

Kay is bringing sustained showers to deep Southern California while bringing scattered showers and storms elsewhere in Southern California. However, Friday into this weekend is when its surge of moisture into Southern California will be most significant as the system continues to wind down well offshore.

Gusty winds are also occurring, especially in the higher terrain east of San Diego.

Flood watches have been issued by the National Weather Service from the mountains and nearby valleys of Southern California into the adjacent deserts as far east as western Arizona and southern Nevada. This is where rainfall from Kay is most likely to trigger flash flooding, including in recent burn areas.

At least some pockets of heavy rain are expected in coastal Southern California Friday into the weekend, including in San Diego and Los Angeles. It's uncertain how much rain to expect in these areas at this time, but flash flooding is possible.

Total rainfall in parts of the Southern California mountains could be 1 to 4 inches (locally higher) through Saturday.

Amounts in other areas like coastal Southern California, southern Nevada and western Arizona will be lighter, overall. But rainfall could be excessive in localized pockets.

In addition to the rainfall, gusty winds will persist or increase in Southern California on Friday, particularly in the mountains, despite Kay's weakening well to the south. Some gusts over 50 mph are possible, similar to a modest Santa Ana wind event, in the areas shaded in the map below.

Those winds could enhance wildfire danger prior to the onset of any rainfall. That includes the ongoing Fairview Fire near Hemet.
