Syracuse, N.Y. -- Rounds of heavy rain today and into Tuesday could cause isolated flash flooding in Central New York.
The National Weather Service says all of Central New York is in the “slight” risk category for flash flooding, which is defined as at least a 15% chance of flooding occurring within 25 miles of any given point. Some spots could get 3 inches or more if a series of thunderstorms “train,” or move across the same point like passing train cars.
“We will need to watch for stripes of heavy rain over the same area, which could cause flash flooding,” the weather service said. “Most rain amounts will be under one inch but 1 to 3 inches are likely due to multiple thunderstorms.“
The weather service has issued a hazardous weather alert for nearly all of Upstate New York, although the greatest impacts from the storms are more likely in the Finger Lakes and Central New York.
Flash flooding is “the rapid and extreme flow of water into a normally dry area,” according to the weather service.
Rain and thunderstorms are expected to reach Syracuse by mid-afternoon today. Rain could be heavy through early Tuesday morning, when it will taper off and then linger for much of the day.
Storms strong enough to cause damage, such as uprooting trees, are also possible today, but are less likely than flash flooding, the weather service said.
Rainfall is about a half-inch below normal this month for Syracuse so far in September.
