While EVs may be creating a lot of buzz lately, it’s not long before everyone’s reminded the heavy duty pickup segment may be the most competitive in the market, and if the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD line-up introduced Monday is any indication, the struggle to be on top isn’t abating any.
Heavy-duty truck owners like many things, but they’re sticklers on a few: more power and more capability. Chevrolet’s 2024 Silverado HD looks to deliver both.
“Silverado has always been about capability,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, during a call with the media introducing the new truck. “Certainly we know what our customers want in the marketplace. This will be the most favorable and commanding HD we’ve ever built.”
More power
That improved capability begins with more powerful, responsive engines. The 6.6-liter gas and 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel both were tweaked to improve output to a SAE-certified 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. While the ratings for performance were made available, those for fuel economy were not, officials saying they’ll come closer to the actual launch of the truck.
Officials noted additional changes and upgrades were designed to produce a more efficient combustion, improving overall performance. Engineers enhanced low-end torque production by as much as 25% for better low-speed response and climbing grades — especially when towing.
Much of that comes from being mated to a new Allison 10-speed transmission. By shifting from the old 6-speed offering, the additional gears prevent power drops and slippage, allowing for a smoother right and better application of power longer. It also improves grade braking with the gas engines, Chevy noted.
A new, more powerful look
Man does live on bread alone, and neither do heavy-duty pickup buyer, which is another way of saying: don’t make an ugly truck and Chevy’s worked hard on that front too.
The designers retained the vehicle’s distinct front end, giving it an even more “commanding presence,” said Jennifer Kraska, director, Chevrolet Interiors, adding, “This is a confident new face for Silverado HD. We’ve pushed the lights out to the corner to emphasize with and there’s new grille and headlights.”
The rest of the truck is simple and clean. While there’s some subtle sculpting as you slide down the sides of the Silverado HD, there’s nothing extraneous. It conveys a sense of calm readiness — an ability to tackle just about anything.
That ability extends around the back to the multi-function tailgate, which is now become the standard for serious truck owners seemingly. However, the capability to handle anything extends to the bed itself. One of the updates for the 2024 model is the Durabed cargo box that optimizes every square inch for maximum cargo capability — including up to 83.5 cubic feet with the long box. The truck also retains the CornerStep rear bumper and BedSteps.
