Tropical Storm Fred: Rip current risk high at Alabama beaches - AL.com

Even with Tropical Storm Fred headed to a landfall well to the east on Monday, Alabama beachgoers got strong warnings to stay out of the water.

Rip current risk was expected to be high at all of Alabama’s coastal beaches, including Dauphin Island, according to an assessment issued by the Mobile/Pensacola office of the National Weather Service. That high risk level also applied to Florida Panhandle beaches to the east and was expected to apply through Tuesday night.

Local authorities issued warnings of their own. The city of Orange Beach showed video of an angry surf on its Twitter feed and said that there were “a lot of sightseers on the beach this morning.” Double red flags were flying in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, meaning the water was off limits; Orange Beach asked people to stay out “for your safety and the safety of our Surf Rescue lifeguards.”

“Disobeying Double Red Flags could lead to arrest of fine,” warned the city. Its surf report said conditions were choppy with waves at 4-6 feet and strong westerly currents, with a high surf advisory.

The Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency tweeted a warning that double red flags mean no wading and no surfing, as well as no swimming.
