Weather Alert Day
The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for the threat of severe storms that could produce damaging winds and heavy rain late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Synopsis:
A low pressure system developing off the Rockies Friday will trek across Colorado into Kansas Friday night into Saturday morning. The associated warm front will be draped across Kansas and southwest Missouri during the day Saturday, sending a few showers through the area on Saturday morning. The front lifts north as low pressure gets closer to Mid-Missouri Saturday night, increasing moisture and instability across eastern Kansas into western Missouri. Storms that develop as rotating supercells across central and eastern Kansas on Saturday afternoon will congeal into a complex of thunderstorms that will ride along this boundary that will be positioned along I-70 Saturday night. Those storms reach Mid-Missouri late Saturday night and will pose a heavy rain and wind threat.
Timing:
Most of Saturday is dry after the morning round of showers, but the main severe weather threat holds off until after 11PM. A complex of showers and storms moves into the Kansas City area late and progresses east-southeast through the overnight hours. Storms will be the strongest at the onset in areas north of I-70 and west of Highway 63, where the potential for damaging winds will be the highest. Storms progress along and north of I-70 through early Sunday morning, weakening considerably and spreading a bit farther south by sunrise. Showers exit the area by mid-late morning, leaving us with cloud cover and cool temperatures for Sunday afternoon.
Impacts:
Damaging winds in excess of 50-60 mph will be the main concern with this Weather Alert Day, especially along the leading edge of the complex of storms that moves in late Saturday night. Torrential rain will also be a problem, specifically for those who have to be on the road overnight. Rainfall amounts will quickly add up to 1-2" along and north of I-70. Isolated higher amounts will be possible where stronger storms develop.
Prepare:
Keep an eye on the evolving forecast this weekend on ABC 17 News. A great resource to have is the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather app. You can download it for free and set it to your location to get severe weather and lightning alerts at all hours of the day. Another great option for overnight storms is a NOAA weather radio, which can be purchased at most local hardware stores. These can be programmed for severe thunderstorms, tornado warnings, as well as flash flood alerts.
