Heavy thunderstorms in San Antonio bring flash flooding, road closures - San Antonio Express-News

A band of strong thunderstorms that was expected to drop at least an inch of rain swept through San Antonio, producing numerous road closures and reports of flooded roadways Saturday.

The line of storms that came from the west drenched the area. As of 2 p.m., a total of 72 roads were closed, according to the Bexar County website. San Antonio police were inundated with reports of flooded roadways while firefighters were responding to reports of people stuck in high water.

Officers were blocking off ramps to area highways where water was accumulating, and creeks were also under close observation. A creek that runs through the 400 block of Pinn Road near West Commerce Street overflowed its banks, leading crews to barricade the road.

“This may be the strongest, but we can’t rule out more thunderstorms in the wake of this initial band,” NWS meteorologist Matthew Brady said Saturday.

Flash flooding was a concern because San Antonio already had accumulated 4 to 6 inches of rainfall from the week’s earlier storms.

“If anyone does come across flooded roadways, turn around, don’t drown,” Brady said.

He said the severe weather should start to clear out as evening approaches.

With the excessive cloud cover and rain, temperatures are only expected to be as high as 75 degrees.
