Heavy Rain Leads to Animal Rescue at Glasgow Shelter - WKMS

A string of heavy storms has led to a demonstration of community support for its local animal shelter.

The heavy rain that hit southern Kentucky early Tuesday morning led to an evacuation of the Glasgow-based Barren River Animal Welfare Association.

Staff members, city workers, and volunteers moved 40 animals—including dogs, cats, and rabbits—out of BRAWA.

“Everybody is safe, nobody was injured, and most of them never even got wet,” said BRAWA board member and volunteer Molly Taylor.

She said there was standing water throughout the facility when volunteers arrived to see the damage.

The animals were taken to local veterinary offices and the old Barren County correctional facility.

Taylor said community members have been dropping off donations ever since people learned what happened.

“We put a call out for water, cleaning supplies, bleach, paper towels, and the response has

been tremendous. This community really rallied together,” Taylor said.

Taylor added BRAWA is seeking monetary donations in an effort to make sure they can thoroughly clean and disinfect the facility. “Because we don’t know what was in that water that was rushing through the building. It could have been sewage, or have all kinds of chemicals in it.”

With more rain expected Tuesday evening, Taylor said the shelter will evaluate when the time is right to return the animals to the shelter.
