There is a First Alert in effect for significant snow in Philadelphia and the suburbs. Coastal flooding and strong winds are a concern at the Jersey Shore.

Coastal flooding will be an issue starting with Monday’s high tide cycle at the Jersey Shore around 10 a.m. Strong winds could also cause trouble along the coast.

Light snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain fell overnight into Monday morning with some pockets of dry weather mixed in. Heavy snowfall rates will then develop mid to late Monday morning and continue into the evening.

The best bet is to stay home, enjoy the snow and let road crews do their work unless you need to be someplace.

NBC10's Randy Gyllenhaal shows you what the snow that fell during the first round of the winter storm in King of Prussia, Montgomery County, looked like as of Monday morning. One driver who Randy spoke to had advice for other drivers, "stay home."

How Much More Snow Will Fall and When Will It Intensify?

The second round of heavy snow is expected to start in the Lehigh Valley during the morning. It should be snowing in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities by midday, with the heavier snow in those areas coming in the early afternoon.

Snowfall totals could vary drastically even within counties as South Philadelphia is expected to get less snow than Chestnut Hill.

Here are the additional snow accumulations that are expected Monday on top of the 2 to 6 inches the area received Sunday:

Less than 1 inch: Jersey Shore and Delaware Beaches

1 to 3 inches: Interior South Jersey and Delaware

3 to 8 inches: Philadelphia and immediate Pennsylvania suburbs & I-295 communities in South Jersey

8 to 12 inches: Lower Bucks, central Montgomery and northern Chester counties

NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Krystal Klei is keeping on eye on the Lehigh Valley and Berks County where more than a foot of snow could still fall Monday. She also is tracking a flooding threat along the Jersey Shore.

12 to 18 inches: Central and upper Bucks, northern Montgomery and northern Berks counties, and Trenton

16 to 20 inches: Lehigh Valley, Allentown east to Easton along I-78

The snowfall amounts will vary drastically across the Philadelphia region Monday.

Moderate flooding will occur at high tide along the Jersey Shore Monday morning around 10 a.m. and Monday evening between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Minor coastal flooding could occur Tuesday morning. In addition, wind gusts of over 55 mph will be possible at the beaches.

The storm is expected to wind down overnight into Tuesday morning. Lingering scattered snow showers can be expected into Tuesday afternoon.

Snow Emergencies and School Closings

The City of Philadelphia declared a snow emergency which began at 6 p.m. Sunday, meaning all parked vehicles must be moved off snow emergency routes for plowing. There will be no trash pickup in Philly Monday. In addition, the School District of Philadelphia as well as Philadelphia Archdiocese high schools and elementary schools will close all school buildings Monday, though classes will still take place because they're already virtual.

You can keep track of all the school closures and delays in our regions here.

Gov. Phil Murphy also declared a State of Emergency for New Jersey that began at 7 p.m. Sunday.

All NJ Transit buses, rail (except for the Atlantic City Rail Line), light rail and Access Link service will also be temporarily suspended systemwide for the entire service day on Monday.

NBC10's Miguel Martinez-Valle reports on the state of emergency on New Jersey as folks are urged to stay home and stay off roads.

AMTRAK's Keystone Service from Harrisburg to Philadelphia to New York will also operate on a limited schedule.

If you have a flight, check with Philadelphia International Airport before you head out.

How Will This Impact Coronavirus Vaccinations?

Philadelphia is canceling all city-run coronavirus testing and vaccination locations and "is working" to reschedule appointments, according to a city press release.

In Montgomery County, Monday's expected snow caused the cancellation of the county's COVID-19 vaccination clinic scheduled at the Montgomery County Community College. People who had appointments will be automatically rescheduled for Norristown High School on Friday, Feb. 5.

The Allentown Health Bureau canceled vaccinations Monday and Tuesday at the Agri-Plex at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Those who had appointments Monday will now be seen Wednesday at the same time as their original appointment. Those who had Tuesday appointments will be shifted to Thursday.

New Jersey is also cancelling all six mega vaccination sites on Monday.

The Camden County COVID-19 Vaccination Center will be closed Monday. All appointments were rescheduled for Wednesday, a county spokesperson said.

Stay Ahead of the Storm

It is important to stick with the NBC10 Weather Team's latest forecast as the track could continue to shift. A shift in track could mean a change in what Philadelphia-area neighborhoods get the heaviest and most intense snowfall before the storm moves out Tuesday.
