KEOKUK (WGEM) -- Keokuk firefighters said a fire caused heavy damage to a floor of an apartment building Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters said they got a report of a smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the building at 829 Morgan Street around 2:20 p.m..
They said when they arrived, flames were coming out of a second story bathroom window on the side of the building, reaching all the way up to buildings peak.
Firefighters said they knocked the fire down quickly, roughly five to 10 minutes after arriving.
They said while no was was home at the time of the fire, there was heavy damage to the second floor exterior wall as well as heavy smoke and water damage in the affected area.
Firefighters said investigators ruled the cause to be improper use of smoking materials.
