Seven weeks away from the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2020 season, the selection committee plans to accommodate late starts within the Big Ten and Pac-12 to ensure those conferences are included with a few-game sample size for voting. The committee comes together for a fifth and final time in mid-December following conference championship Saturday for Selection Day — in other words, when ranking controversy hits its high point.
With that in mind, we're trying something a little different this season at 247Sports, debuting our own weekly College Football Playoff rankings based on eye test, strength of schedule and other various factors.
In-house national analysts Barton Simmons, Bud Elliott, Josh Pate, Brandon Marcello, Chris Hummer and myself have all submitted our ballots for the current Top 6 across college football if the selection committee made picks today — Big Ten and Pac-12 included. The point system used for determining spots in the rankings is simple — six points for a first-place vote, five for a second and so on.
We've included the "First Two Out" in our first projection and two teams that received votes but did not make the initial six. Here's a look at who will believe are college football's elite teams heading into the sixth weekend of action and a few others that just missed the cut:
