(HOI) - After days of heavy rainfall, farmers believe some crops might be a total loss.

"A lot of the corn that was submerged in water, or was flattened due to running water, we're going to lose a good portion of that," Jed Pratt said.

"We do have some low areas that are definitely going to suffer a little bit, there probably is going to be some impacted yield," Rush Olson said.

Jed Pratt farms in Tazewell County. Rush Olson farms in McLean. They say, some of the rain actually helped, due to some dry, previous weeks, but not all farmers were that lucky.

"We worried about the drought that we were facing at the time, and 9 inches of rain later, now we're kind of at the other end of extremes," Pratt said.

Pratt says creeks often run through farms, and as the creeks flooded, water spilled over into fields.

"I had some areas, some bottom ground, even some that was leveed, the creek flooded enough that it actually went over the levee," Pratt said.

Olson says one thing that will save some farmers is crop insurance.

"A lot of guys are just waiting and seeing. You don't really have the option to dig ditches right here so what drains, drains," Olson said.

The only bright spot, corn and soybean prices are high right now, but with some areas still flooded, Pratt says it's too early to tell which crops will recover, to pay off, and which they'll lose to mother nature.

"She's going to do what she's going to do. You do the best you can with trying to manage your acres but ultimately it's up to her," Olson said.
