Heavy Rain and Flooding Threat in Texas This Week - WeatherNation

tederes.blogspot.com

Texas has received an incredible amount of rain over the last 7-10 days. Unfortunately another several days of heavy rain and possible flash flooding are ahead as an upper low drifts around near the coastline of Texas and combines with rich moisture at the surface.

Many cities just in the last 24 hours have picked up more than 2″ of rain. Soils are saturated and cannot hold any more water, which is where the flooding threat comes in to play.

Rain rates could top 2″ per hour with near tropical-style downpours. Excessive Rain Outlooks have been issued through Wednesday for places that are expected to have the best chance for flooding. Flash flooding, urban flooding and river flooding will all be possible in the highlighted areas.

The greatest flood threat Tuesday will be in south-central Texas including Corpus Christi. This is where a Slight Risk (Level 2 out of 4) indicates a higher flood risk, but anywhere in the I-10 corridor from Louisiana through Houston and San Antonio as well as El Paso and Fort Stockton could get rounds of heavy rain that could lead to flooding.

The flood outlook Wednesday is a little lower, but  isolated to scattered flood reports are expected from I-10 to the Mexico border.

Heavy rain and flooding that was ongoing Monday may persist overnight into Tuesday in pockets but most of the downpours will lessen.

By mid-morning the heavy rain will ramp up again as energy from the upper low in the Gulf combines with moisture-rich air at the surface. Flooding will be possible in areas from San Antonio south.

Without much of a steering current, the downpours will only move slowly south.

Once again overnight into Wednesday much of the rain will diminish inland but heavy rain will stay offshore in the Gulf. But by near sunrise Wednesday more of the heavy rain will be moving onshore.

Heavy rain will be more isolated Wednesday than Tuesday. Still in spots with the heaviest downpours or areas of rain that move slowly could create flooding in a few areas.

Rain totals could be in excess of 5-7″ in some areas through Thursday afternoon. The highest rain totals in central and southern Texas line up with the Excessive Rain Outlooks for where flooding concerns are the highest.
