As Colorado braces for a major snowstorm to blanket the state, the Colorado Department of Transportation is urging motorists to stay off the roads during the storm.
Forecasts for just how much snow will cover the state varies, but the consensus is heavy snow will impact the foothills and the Front Range with accumulations as high as one to three feet of snow.
Snowfall is expected to begin late Friday evening and last through Sunday evening.
According to CDOT, the last time a storm significantly impacted the state like this was in 2003 when up to six feet of snow landed on parts of the foothills.
Heavy accumulations are possible along I-70, I-25 and other highway corridors in the foothills and the Front Range, promoting CDOT to warn motorists to avoid travel if possible and head to destinations before the storm hits.
During a high-impact snowstorm, travel should be limited to emergency and essential reasons with the proper vehicle and tires for heavy snow. Officials also encourage motorists to have an emergency kit with blankets, food, batteries, water, a shovel and survival supplies should they get stuck or stranded.
In a press release Wednesday, CDOT stated that it likely will close some roadways for safety reasons depending on the severity of the storm. Those include the I-70 Mountain Corridor and I-25 South Gap construction zone between Castle Rock and Monument.
For Fremont County, Accuweather is forecasting between 3-6 inches of snow from Friday evening into Sunday evening. Temperatures are likely to stay in the 40s with lows in the 20s during those days.
Sunshine and highs in the 50s are expected to return Monday
