Why current weather pattern could be severe weather, derecho-maker - MLive.com

Over the next week we have a weather pattern that could bring severe storms across Michigan.

The weather pattern for the next week has a hot, humid dome of air centered just south of Michigan and sprawling from Nebraska to Ohio. On the north side of the hot dome is the fastest blowing winds aloft, called the jetstream.

The southern edge of the jetstream is a classic location for fast-moving clusters of severe thunderstorms. The jetstream will be right over Michigan from Friday through next Wednesday, and even occasionally over the next two weeks. If these storms form a line longer than 200 miles, and race across several states, we called the severe weather event a derecho.

Here is the jetstream forecast from Friday, July 17, 2020 through next Thursday, July 23, 2020.

jetstream

Forecast of jetstream from July 17, 2020 to July 23, 2020.

The green, yellow and orange colored areas are segments of the jetstream with stronger winds. We call them jet streaks. These jet streaks are where the clusters of severe storms develop.

Between tomorrow and next Wednesday, there could be three such jet streaks passing just north of Michigan. The storms form on the south side of the jet streak.

Another weather feature that breeds strong to severe storms is instability. Instability is maximized on the north side of the hot dome. Next, below, you can see batches of unstable air traveling across the Great Lakes region.

cape

Areas of instability in the forecast from Friday through Sunday, July 26, 2020.

The orange, red and purple areas have unstable air. Unstable air rises easily and turns into thunderstorms.

So the overall pattern says we could have a couple of rounds of severe thunderstorms across Michigan over the next week or two.

Unfortunately we can only get a good fix on the next batch of possible severe storms coming over the next 12 to 24 hours. These storms move so fast. Right now, Friday night into Saturday morning and Saturday night into Sunday morning are the two possible stormy times this weekend.

These storm clusters don’t last long, and don’t last all day. But they can be severe for the half hour to hour they are blowing through your area.
