MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Oklahoma is a heavy favorite to claim a sixth consecutive Big 12 Conference football championship this fall. The Sooners were selected first in the league’s preseason poll that surveyed media members throughout the conference footprint.
Oklahoma State and Texas both collected first-place votes and they are listed second and third, respectively.
Iowa State, Baylor, TCU and Kansas State occupy the No. 4 through No. 7 spots.

West Virginia has been selected eighth, ahead of Texas Tech and Kansas.
Oklahoma has posted a 41-4 record in regular season conference play over the last five seasons and Lincoln Riley has won a conference title in each of his three seasons as head coach. They have been the odds on favorite eight times in the last decade. The Sooners garnered 80 of the 90 first-place votes.
The Mountaineers were picked eighth last fall and finished tied for seventh with a 3-6 conference mark. West Virginia’s best finish in the Big 12 came in 2016, when the Mountaineers tied for second with a 7-2 record. They have posted winning records within the conference in three of the last four seasons. West Virginia is an even 36-36 in league play since joining the Big 12 in 2012.
