CORALVILLE, Iowa (KWWL) - Many large stores in the area closed early and barricaded their doors and windows Monday afternoon after some people at a police brutality protest late Sunday night turned violent.
Coralville Police officers were also assisted by other agencies in blocking off all entrances to Coral Ridge Mall for a second night. A city-wide curfew running 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. also started Monday.
However, our KWWL crew at the mall into the late evening hours Monday saw no demonstrations take place.
"We at the City of Coralville recognize and support the rights of citizens to demonstrate and protest," Mayor John Lundell said in a statement announcing the curfew. "We also recognize that vandalism and violence are damaging to our community."
Some people who broke off from Sunday's protest damaged the Walmart off of Commerce Drive. On Monday, employees could be seen stacking shipping pallets and mulch bags 10-feet high; protecting doors and windows from a possible second wave.
The Hy-Vee off of 2nd Street also had store vans parked in front of its entrances to protect against possible damage.
Coral Ridge Mall closed early, at 6 p.m., on Monday as to "not jeopardize the safety of our shoppers," management company Brookfield Properties Retail said to KWWL.
