Louisville fire crews battled a blaze Friday morning at a vacant warehouse just off 30th Street in the Russell neighborhood, according to officials.
Maj. Bobby Cooper, spokesman for the Louisville Division of Fire, said crews were called out at 4:53 a.m. to the "heavy fire" at a five-story, vacant warehouse at Madison and 30th streets.
The warehouse was reportedly a former tobacco processing facility, and Cooper said demolition work on the building had began in early June.
The structure is also across the street from the planned Louisville Urban League Sports and Learning Complex.
"The size and structural integrity of the building, debris and contents within the building, limited acces and heavy volume of fire were a few of the challenges fire crews endured," Cooper said in an emailed statement.
Additional crews were called out to fight the blaze, with over 70 firefighters ultimately joining in the effort and brining the fire under control, Cooper said.
No injuries were reported, Cooper said, and crews were remaining at the scene throughout the day.
Cooper added that arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
