Aljamain Sterling’s Twitter presence made fight week difficult.
Aljamain Sterling made quick work of Cory Sandhagen, submitting him in the first round and moving one step closer to a bantamweight title shot. Despite the UFC 250 win, Sterling took a lot of heat from fans on Twitter about even competing because of the recent world events.
“It was a bit heavy, you know. I’ve had some people attacking me actually; at the beginning of fight week saying that I wasn’t using my platform to speak up,” Sterling told media members during his virtual post-fight scrum. “People that don’t even follow me. I’m like ‘dude, how do you even know who I am? You don’t even follow me. How do you even know who I am to come reach out and start attacking me about what I believe? You don’t know what I believe, you know. So, I think people have to understand where we sit as athletes, you know. We still have a job to do. You know, to start pressuring someone to go on social media because you feel like they should when they have a bigger task in front of them. And I think it’s a bit unfair. At the same time, I do think [that] as an athlete, it’s on us to use our platform for good, you know. So I am just glad that I have found the balance to do good and be able to stay focused on a big opportunity and a big fight.”
Aljamain Sterling plans to stay ready in-case Petr Yan or Jose Aldo can’t fight.
Sterling is excited about the opportunities ahead of him. After a year layoff, the victory puts him in a position to contend for a vacant title. The UFC plans on having Petr Yan and Jose Aldo fight for the gold. If needed, Sterling, who improved to 19-3, is interested in stepping in if either fighter gets hurt. For now, only time will tell.
