Fire tore through the Brickyard Brewing Company, 436 Center St., Lewiston, shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, causing heavy damage to it as well as its adjacent restaurant.
“We were sitting at a campfire and saw a little flame at first. I called 911. It spread up through the roof,” said Dylan Empson, 18, of Lewiston, who was on Ridge Street behind the restaurant.
"We were just talking and heard a dinging, an alarm," he said.
The fire also caused some damage to the roof of the adjacent Brickyard Pub, 432 Center St.
According to Lewiston Fire Company No. 1 Chief Les Myers, Niagara County Origin and Cause and Town of Lewiston Fire Investigators are investigating the incident. No damage estimates were released.
Myers said nearly 50 firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night. He said one firefighter was treated and transported for heat exhaustion but is recovering at home.
Myers said Lewiston responded to the fire at 10:39 p.m., arriving minutes later to find a "well-evolved commercial structure with flames coming from the roof and rear of the building."
Firefighters were able to enter into the Brickyard Brewing Company and up to the second-floor center of the fire, but were pulled out due to heavy fire, Myers said.
As ladder trucks from Upper Mountain Fire and Niagara Active Hose directed water onto the fire from the front and rear of the structure, ground crews with hand lines and master streams worked to stop the fire from spreading to the attached Brickyard Pub and other nearby structures, Myers said.
Myers said the roof collapsed, necessitating firefighters to battle the fire from two adjoining roofs.
Firefighters from Youngstown Fire as well as an additional ladder truck from Sanborn Fire Company and an engine crew from Ransomville Fire Company also helped battle the fire.
In a tweet on the Brickyard Brewing Company account, the owners said: "This isn't the end of us. We will be back. Bigger, and better than ever. Thank you all for the love and support."
The Brickyard Pub, which opened in 2005, had been one of the busiest gathering spots in the village prior to businesses being shut down because of the Covid-19 virus.
It and Brickyard Brewing Co. have been doing a curbside takeout business during the pandemic.
