There’s growing confidence among National Weather Service forecasts that a storm system on track to roll through the Great Lakes area later this week could bring some heavy snow for some areas of Northern Michigan. This is great news for winter enthusiasts who have been disappointed to see our snowpack melt away over the last few weeks. But not-so-great news for those of us happy to be giving our shovels and snowblowers a rest.
There are still lots of unanswered questions about Thursday’s storm, including which area of the state will see the bulk of the accumulating snow, and which spots might get freezing rain instead. Right now, NWS meteorologists are forecasting the snow will likely happen north of Grand Rapids and into the Upper Peninsula. And this is predicted to be heavy, wet snow.
“There is growing potential for a snow system to impact Northern Michigan this Thursday,” meteorologists from the NWS office in Gaylord said. “Areas could see accumulating heavy snow, which could bring some snowpack back to the area! We still have uncertainty with the exact track of the low pressure system, which will greatly alter what areas could see the most snowfall.”
Farther south, the NWS staff in Grand Rapids are not forecasting heavy snow for that area. Meteorologists had this to say in the forecast notes: “We’re looking at generally rain south of M-57 and snow or mixed rain/snow north of there. Total snowfall accumulation north of M-57 from Wednesday night through Thursday will be in the 1-3 inch range.”
Freezing rain could also fall along the U.S. 10 corridor east of U.S. 131.
Details on how much snow we’ll get and where the snow vs. rain will fall should start to become more specific in the next 24 hours.
