HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Strong-to-severe storms are possible Monday afternoon.

Channel 3 issued an Early Warning Weather Alert for the possibility of gusty wind and quick but heavy downpours.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for southern Fairfield County until 3:45 p.m.

Fairfield County is in a Flash Flood Warning until 4:30 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Fairfield County and Litchfield County until 10 p.m. Monday night.

A wave of rain arrived on Monday morning.

“There are some storms and lightning strikes close to the shoreline,” said Channel 3′s Lorin Richardson.

It was the first round of rainfall, which she called beneficial due to drought conditions.

Once it passes, a couple of isolated storms could happen Monday afternoon or evening, followed by some potential strong-to-severe storms.

“I am saying mostly west of I-91,” Richardson said. “The biggest risks are strong, potentially damaging wind gusts, heavy quick downpours and localized flooding.”

The timeframe looks to be 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Track any storms that pop up with Channel 3′s interactive radar here.

Flooding may especially be an issue because of the abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions for the whole state.

“An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out,” Richardson warned. “The biggest threat in northwestern Connecticut.”

Ahead of the potential storms, muggy and oppressive humidity was felt.

Dew points were in the 70s to start the day on Monday.

After the storms push off to the east along with a front, the heat and humidity is expected to spike in the upcoming days.

“We are forecasting our first official heat wave of the year starting on Tuesday and stretching potentially until the weekend,” Richardson said.

A heat wave consists of three consecutive days of 90+ degree temperatures recorded at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks.

Tuesday and Wednesday should both be sunny with highs topping out in the 90s inland and upper-80s and low-90s along the shoreline.

“Plus, with some muggy and oppressive humidity literally sticking around, it will be a dangerous combination,” Richardson said. “Be sure to limit your time outside and keep hydrating!”

The next chance for rain may come Thursday in the form of showers and storms.
