WSIL -- A Flash Flood WATCH has been issued for much of southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and western Kentucky.

A very active day is expected Wednesday with heavy rain and potential for a few strong storms.

The rain will come in multiple waves, much of which will be heavy. The first wave of wet weather will begin to move into southeast Missouri around sunrise and then spread northeast into southern Illinois and western Kentucky through the late morning and early afternoon. A few of these storms could produce small hail in addition to very heavy rain and a lot of lightning.

By mid-afternoon, the first wave of storms will be shifting northeast out of the area, likely leading to some areas receiving at least a little dry time.

The main threat for severe storms will remain south of our area, but if enough instability can work it's way into the Missouri Bootheel and northwest Tennessee, a few strong storms are possible.

There's still some uncertainty regarding how far north the threat for severe storms will actually extend, but the highest threat will be in the Bootheel and up to around the Kentucky/Tennesse line.

Farther north, the threat will be lower, especially in southern Illinois.

In addition to severe storms, there's growing concern with with the threat for flash flooding. With much of the region receiving more than 3" of rainfall in the last seven days, it will not take much to create significant flooding problems. Driving through flooded roads is NEVER a good idea.
