SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board is set to vote on whether to keep its current county administrator on board on an interim basis between his retirement date and the starting date of his successor.
DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson said the County Board is on track to hopefully approve the hiring of his successor during their Dec. 16 meeting but it still might be another 30 days from then for the new hire to give notice at a previous job. He said he created a resolution to appoint an interim and had told county elected officials that he's willing to fulfill interim duties if that is the will of the County Board – and his feelings wouldn't be hurt if it wasn't the will of the board, he added.
“Whatever you want to do, I just want a smooth transition,” Hanson said.
Multiple members of the county's executive committee spoke in favor of naming Hanson the interim administrator before the committee voted, 9-0, to bring the arrangement before the County Board for a final vote.
"In the interest of continuity, I think it would be a good idea to approach Mr. Hanson to fulfill these duties for a period of time until we have a new county administrator on board," DeKalb County Board Vice-Chairman John Frieders said.
The proposal will now go before a County Board vote during the board's meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday via Zoom.
Hanson is retiring as of December 31, 2020 after 37 years of service with the county, according to county documents. The county's executive committee started the process to recruit for a new county administrator with applications due no later than Dec. 4.
