COVID-19 Q&A: How to plan for the holidays under current pandemic restrictions - Duluth News Tribune

Should we gather with extended family? Should we cancel those traditions this year? Is there a way to still gather safely with family members of different households?

It all depends on a variety of factors, according to public health officials.

For Duluth Mayor Emily Larson, those decisions have already been made. Her family will be staying home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas — something she said she has never done before.

"I know that other families may make different choices based on their comfort level and risk level," Larson said in a news conference on Thursday. "There is no single outing, in my mind, that is worth the health risk of this pandemic to you and your family. So please be careful to be cautious."

On Friday, an executive order from Gov. Tim Walz went into effect that limits all social gatherings to no more than 10 people when indoors or outdoors. The order also prohibits members from more than three households from gathering inside.

St. Louis County Public Health Division Director Amy Westbrook encouraged people to consider having a virtual Thanksgiving, staying close to home and avoiding any large indoor gathering.

For those who still plan to gather with people outside their household, she said people should make sure that group is small. Limit social interactions for 14 days before going. Get tested, too. And make a plan: agree to practice physical distancing, wearing masks and increasing ventilation by opening windows.

"Really think about the potential of lowering your risk while you're celebrating with family," Westbrook said. "We all want to celebrate with family, but we can do it safely."
