PHOENIX, AZ — Two brothers encountered an electric current in the waters of Lake Pleasant on Sunday, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced Monday. The source of the electric current is unknown and remains under investigation.

In a news conference, sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said fire personnel responded to a 6:30 p.m. call to an emergency at the the Scorpion Bay marina, located some 40 miles north of Phoenix.

There, the first responders found bystanders performing CPR to Michael Miller, who was unresponsive in the back of his boat. Enriquez said that Miller had dove into the water after Timothy Miller, his brother, disappeared under the water.

Both men were accompanied by their wives on a weekend of boating activities. According to the statements by one of the wives, Timothy Miller had entered the water and experienced "some kind of electrical current inside the water," Enriquez said.

"His brother Michael immediately jumps into the water to help him. He also starts to experience these symptoms," Enriquez continued. "One of the wives of the brothers jumps in and she starts to experience the same thing."

It was the wife of one of the brothers — whom Enriquez did not name at the news conference — who supplied witness statements about what she said felt like an electric current.

Bystanders were able to pull her and Michael Miller from the water, and Miller was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body of Timothy Miller was eventually recovered from beneath the nearby dock.

According to Enriquez, investigators are looking into the cause of the tragic deaths. Boats using the marina have access to electrical power, but investigators have not determined whether the marina and boat itself may have contributed to the incident.

The incident was first investigated by the Peoria Fire-Medical Department, which wrote in a Facebook post late Sunday night that its first responders were on the scene of a "serious incident" at Lake Pleasant.

"Originally thought to be a drowning, [it] turns out to be a possible electrocution accident," the department said.

The Peoria department's Facebook post initially described five victims involved in the possible electrocution, and several news outlets later described one victim as missing. During Monday's press conference, Enriquez clarified that there were only two victims, the Miller brothers.

"They were both members of the marina, they frequent the marina, and they were on their boat," Enriquez said, noting that the men had taken the boat out on Saturday.

"There were no issues on Saturday," he said. "We're trying to figure out what occurred from Saturday into Sunday."

Michael Miller was 50. Timothy Miller was 53.
