As Joey Tribiani (Friends) and before him Vinnie Barbarino (Welcome Back Kotter) used to say, “How you doin?” Where I come from this interesting three word phrase was how we greeted people. Hello? no, Hi? no. So, how you doin? If we are down South it would be “How y’all doin?” whether greeting one person or a group of people. Just not the same as up North. Seriously, how are you all doing?

As a community I believe we are weathering this time darn good. All I suggest is that I hope you are going outside to get some fresh air and most of all the warm vitamin D filled sunshine. Our immune system is most important to ward off this virus and there are other foods that offer a good dose of this important vitamin that we should be consuming. Did you know that caviar is an excellent source of vitamin D? My next trip to the market I will be looking for some yummy sturgeon roe. NOT. Aside from the price, the taste, like scotch, is an acquired taste.

In spite of it all, there are upsides to the current normal even though the 1st Amendment contradicts the edict of quarantine. What I do not understand is if we are wearing masks, and I agree this is a good thing, why do we still have to be six feet apart from each other with the exception of family members at home although precautions should be a part of our daily confinement? Some good during this time is parents are now talking more to their children and vice versa. There is more family together time—although this may be wearing thin.

Something else I read the other day was family gardens making a resurgence. Parents reading up on how to plant and sow vegetables and kids learning where those tasty carrots come from before they hit the dinner plate. My first garden in Escondido produced gnarled carrots due to the decomposed granite earth which was hard as rock. Then the gophers or rabbits swiped all the lettuce. One day there were two rows of sprouting iceberg and the next morning nothing. Bill Murray, wish you were around then.

Another plus will be seeing all the new hairstyles because salons and barbershops are closed. My hair is now down to my collar but I will not cut it myself in the Moe Howard style. For those of you don’t know, Moe was one of the 3 Stooges who had the “bowl cut” hairstyle. It will be interesting looking for the creativity in personal grooming which will very soon be prevalent. Could it be that these are the worst of times and the best of times?

What is troublesome for me is watching all the finger pointing coming about with the CDC being the latest target. Who did or didn’t do something appropriately or timely. Was it China, Trump, Fauci or DeBlasio or pick a name. Instead of casting blame we should be employing every resource available to come up with a solution to this pandemic. There will be ample opportunity to waste time with these arguments when COVID19 is conquered. Time to Come Together, credit to Lennon and McCartney. It is so much easier to get the boat moving forward when all oars are working in unison.

One thing is certain: we cannot keep printing money. We need people back to work earning income not receiving freebies. There are major retailers filing for or in the process of filing for bankruptcy. Some may not recover —although most I believe will come back after dissing all their current creditors through the legal system. Above it all, we will prevail.

This quote seems quite appropriate. “The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome becomes bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance”—Cicero, 55 BC.

Ending light, this week’s plate TWNZHP. I have no idea what this could mean. Twins something?
