The San Francisco Bay Area got light to moderate rain from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but residents may need to clear out their gutters again because another solid soaking is on the way.
The National Weather Service reports that the region should see a break in the rain this afternoon, but the next wave arrives Thursday evening, with a deep tropical moisture moving in from the southwest. This atmospheric river is expected to bring even heavier rain Friday night, which should carry through to Saturday afternoon.
"Later today through tonight, we're going to have widespread light to moderate rain," NWS meteorologist Brian Garcia told SFGATE. He describes this as a "3 pulse storm" and expects the final pulse on Saturday to be significantly stronger.
"That's when we're going to get widespread moderate rain with areas of heavy rain," he says.
While the storm is expected to be at its heaviest during the daytime hours on Saturday, Garcia added that "everything should be kicked out of the Bay Area by Saturday at 8 or 9 p.m. We should have clear skies for the fireworks show off the Embarcadero."
The weather service has issued a flood watch for all of the Bay Area, Santa Cruz County and Big Sur from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. "A number of forecast points on East and South Bay streams and creeks are already forecast to rise above monitor stage and potentially above flood stage," the weather service warns.
Due to the possibility of wet roads, flooding and landslides in some spots, Garcia warns that driving will be precarious on New Year's Eve.
This storm is expected to bring up to 6 inches of rain in some areas, with wind gusts as high as 32 mph. Temperatures will likely hover in the mid-50s for the rest of the week, with overnight lows dropping to the upper 40s.
The wet weather has been wreaking havoc around the Bay Area on Thursday morning. As of 8 a.m., BART was reporting delays of 20 minutes throughout the system due to the wet weather conditions. Numerous collisions have been reported on local roads and bridges, including an overturned box truck on Interstate 280 near San Jose and a crash on Interstate 580 in the MacArthur Maze. Caution is encouraged, with the weather service suggesting that people "stay home if you don't need to go out," especially when the heavy rains come in.
