Heavy, wet snow that in some cases, mixed with rain, fell much of Wednesday night across Northeastern Minnesota, leaving a late-winter mess to be shoveled and plowed.
The National Weather Service in Duluth reported 7 inches of snow as of 6 a.m. Thursday, with 11.6 inches in Pine River.
Most of the snow had moved east out of the area, although snow lingered in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region.
Heavy rain was the issue overnight in parts of northern Wisconsin with over an inch falling in Iron County and flooding over Old Highway 63 near Mason, the Weather Service reported.
The snow and slippery roads forced Duluth Public Schools, Hermantown Community Schools and North Shore Community School to close for the day.
The snow wil start melting almost as fast as it fell, with high temperatures near 40 today and near 50 on Saturday.
