Menahga’s Veterans Day program will be a virtual program “because we are committed to honoring our veterans even during a global pandemic,” says organizer Jean Weyer. “Over the past four years, we’ve highlighted WWII, Korea, Vietnam and post-Vietnam era Veterans. This year, we are highlighting the local veterans who have served from 2000 to 2020 and those currently serving our country.”

The Menahga VFW Post 6206 color guard and Park Rapids Area Marine Corps League present the nation’s colors.

All four Menahga School music instructors – Jake Upton, April Hodge, Ian Hendrickson and Beth Hahn – sing the national anthem.

Per tradition, Menaga students have an active role in the event.

A student representative from each kindergarten through sixth grade classroom and a student representative from grades 7-12 form a huge triangle in the shape of a folded U.S. flag while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This portion of the ceremony was organized by Nichole Weston, assisted by Carol Ann Cleveland and Weyer.

Eighth grader Isabelle Aho shares her winning essay for the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen contest. She was one of 102 Menahga students who entered the annual competition, which encourages sixth through eighth graders to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences, and craft a 300- to 400-word essay.

VFW Commander Larry Murphy and Auxiliary President Lori Tomperi present monetary awards to the top seven winners: second place, MacKenzie Anderson; third place, Taliea Honga; fourth place, Claire Haataja; fifth place, Henry Johnson; sixth place, Leya Anderson, and seventh place, Alea Tolkkinen.

“Last Free Measure” by Michael Sweeney is performed by the Menahga High School band, under the direction of Hahn.

Seventeen local veterans who served from 2000 to 2020 submitted military photos and information that were combined into a Google slide presentation.

A Veterans Day poem by Arthur Wyllie is read by eighth grader John Reeves, and “Thank You, Soldiers” by Michael and Angela Souders is performed by Menahga fifth graders, under the direction of Hendrickson.

The program will air on WCTA TV channel 901 at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Nov. 11, 12, 13, 14 and the Menahga School Facebook page on Nov. 11.
