Buckeyes open as heavy home favorite over Rutgers - Lettermen Row

COLUMBUS — Ohio State passed its first road test of the season, dismantling a ranked Penn State team.

Now, the Buckeyes enter a string of games throughout November against clearly overmatched teams. That starts Saturday inside Ohio Stadium, when the they face a Rutgers team that, while showing signs of life under new coach and former Buckeyes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, likely won’t be able to hang with the Big Ten favorite.

Ohio State opened as a 37-point favorite over the Scarlet Knights, according to the folks at VegasInsider.com.

Ohio State has a tough task over the next few weeks. The Buckeyes can’t get bored. They can’t get complacent. They aren’t losing sight of their goals, and the focus is on getting better every week.

“I think we’re going to go in tomorrow, look at the film and just try to get better each and every week,” superstar quarterback Justin Fields said. “We’re going to keep improving each and every practice and just keep getting better.”

Rutgers doesn’t seem like it’ll pose much of a threat to the Buckeyes. But Fields knows that this is still a week full of opportunity to get better, and the Buckeyes will have this week as a heavy home favorite.

Ohio State gambling trends

Ohio State is 2-0 against the spread this season, covering the 26-point spread in the season-opener against Nebraska and barely holding onto the spread to cover the number at Penn State. Rutgers is 1-1 against the spread this season, failing to cover Saturday at home against Indiana after an outright win in Week One over Michigan State.

The Buckeyes have won all six games all-time against Rutgers by an average of 46.5 points, all coming since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten in 2014. Ohio State is 5-1 against the spread against Rutgers in those meetings; they failed to cover the massive 53.5-point spread last season in an easy win. Ohio State was 5-2 against the spread as a home favorite last season.

Ohio State is 38-32 as a home favorite in the last 10 seasons and 48-40-1 against the spread in Big Ten play in that same span. And five of those wins against the number have come against the Scarlet Knights.
