Dark synthwave pioneers Zombi, who were years ahead of that trend, have released a new song, “Earthscraper,” that’s heavier than anything I’ve heard from them in quite a while. Given, they’ve always had a heavy guitar streak, but I have to wonder whether this tune represents a conscious effort to break away from all the synth-heavy bands who followed in their footsteps. I can only speculate, but drummer A.E. Paterra’s comment certainly makes clear that the track’s heaviness was at least intentional:
“A heavy song, and an even heavier video by director Tony Balko. We’ve been excited to share this – it’s heavy in a new way for us and we hope you enjoy it.”
Will the rest of the album from which this single comes, 2020, be in a similar vein? Again, I can only conjecture, but I can’t imagine it being bad either way: this duo has consistently delivered nothing but high quality jams throughout the years, now six albums deep into their career.
2020 is due July 17 via Relapse Records; pre-order here for physical formats or here for digital.
