Buckeyes are heavy favorites to return to CFB Playoff in 2020 - 247Sports

tederes.blogspot.com

Ohio State fans have developed a familiarity with the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes snuck into the first ever Playoff in 2014, despite being on the team's third-string quarterback by the time the postseason began. The Scarlet and Gray went on to win the national title that year. Ohio State then returned to the Playoff in 2016 and was back -- after a brief hiatus -- to end last season.

But the Buckeyes aren't the only team that has made it a bit of a habit of competing on the biggest stage at the end of the college football season. Alabama was a part of each of the Playoff tournaments until last year, winning two national titles. Clemson made its first Playoff in 2016 and hasn't missed going back since. Oklahoma has been in four of the six Playoffs, including each of the last three.

If you dabble in gambling, the Buckeyes are a good bet to be a part of the Playoff again in 2020. In Year 2 of the Ryan Day era, the Scarlet and Gray are expected to be back in the four-team postseason tournament, contending for the national championship. And if you're hoping for much parity, you may be disappointed.

Last week, FOX Bet released updated odds for the 2020 College Football Playoff teams. Ohio State is one of the favorites to be in the mix at the end of the year at -225. The only team with better odds than the Buckeyes to make the Playoff is Clemson -- who defeated the Scarlet and Gray in last year's semifinal -- at -550. Alabama is the only other team with better than even odds at -188. Oklahoma has the fourth-best odds to return to the Playoff at +125.

In fact, you can get good odds (+270) that the Buckeyes, Tigers, Crimson Tide and Sooners are the specific four teams that will make the Playoff in 2020. The other teams with the best odds to compete for the national championship next year are Georgia (+175), Florida (+290), LSU (+400), Texas, Oregon, and Notre Dame (+450).

In 2020, Ohio State will have a number of key contributors back to make the push for a Playoff return. Second-year starting quarterback Justin Fields leads what could be one of the best offenses in the country come the fall. He will have a number of weapons around him in wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, as well as a talented backfield with Oklahoma graduate transfer Trey Sermon and running back Master Teague vying for carries.

Defensively, the Buckeyes will have to replace a Heisman Trophy candidate in defensive end Chase Young, but have a talented group of options on the defensive line with the likes of Jonathon Cooper, Zach Harrison, Tommy Togiai and Taron Vincent, among others. The linebackers are an experienced and talented group with Pete Werner and Tuf Borland returning. The secondary will have to be rebuilt after losing two first-round talents but cornerback Shaun Wade's return is a big boost for the Scarlet and Gray.
